To answer your question, firstly I would like to point out to Sushi that there is no "American" timezone. It is, in fact, covering quite a few time zones.

When it is 8 PM in Las Vegas, Nevada (GMT -7 hours), it is 12:30 in Adelaide, Australia (GMT +9:30).

For the ACT and Melbourne (if my memory serves me correctly) 8 PM Nevada time (GMT -7 hours) it is 1:00 PM in Canberra and Melbourne, Australia (GMT +10 hours).

Of course, it is silly to think that an entire city the size of Melbourne is full of gays, though it is interesting to see the stereotypes.
It is possible, however, that there is a higher concentration of homosexuals in a certain place than elsewhere. For example, any gay people living in rural Australia will most likely move to the city, as it is seen as shameful in regional areas.
