Nintendo of America boasts
that it's riding a streak of success as the country's number one seller
of consoles and handhelds and the number one publisher of games. And,
they're absolutely right according to data released by the NPD. April saw
the Nintendo DS, yet again, take the top place of overall best-selling
system, with more than 470,000 units sold, well ahead of its handheld
competitor, the PSP, which sold through 182,000 units.
Although Wii still remains in short supply, it remained the
best-selling console of April in North America, with more than 360,000
units purchased, nearly double that of its closest competitor, the
PlayStation 2, which garnered sales of 193,000 units. The Xbox 360
managed 174,000, while only 82,000 PlayStation 3 consoles were snapped
up - lower than analyst estimates.
In terms of software, Nintendo was the number one publisher of April as well, with its Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
games for the Nintendo DS topping the charts thanks to combined sales
of 1.7 million games in one week alone. Taking third and fourth places
on the charts respectively were Super Paper Mario and Wii Play.
Nothing is more valuable in the entertainment world than an evergreen franchise," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and COO at Nintendo of America. "These
new Pokémon titles have cemented their place alongside the most
enduring intellectual properties of the book, music and movie
industries. And that appeal will expand even further with the
introduction of Pokémon Battle Revolution to our Wii home console next
month."
